Losing streak continues on two fronts

By: TrivDaddy | October 8th, 2007

I attended the game on Saturday against FC Dallas. With grill and bratwurst in hand, I had hope that the Crew could pull off the last home game of the season. Eddie GavenThe pre-game atmosphere was pretty good. Even through the first half the crowd was very much into the game as it unfolded. With as many shot attempts that were taken, it was hard not to be. Then it came… the goal the crew had been looking for, 1-0 Crew. The stadium erupted. This was the night, the losing streak would come to an end and my losing streak of seeing the crew lose would end as well. Well, done Eddie… I owe you my gratitude.

The second half was about to start. The clock ticked under a minute left for half time…. where’s the Crew? The FCD players were there kicking and keeping loose, but the Crew players were no where to be found. What could they be discussing? The offense played with everything they had and then some. The defense was quite solid and looking impenetrable. This team looked like it wanted to win, wanted to go to the playoffs, wanted to convince the new sponsors the deal that they just made was worth it’s weight in gold. But they had some talking to do that ran almost into the beginning of the second half.

They should have stayed in the locker room.

The first score for Dallas came three minutes into the second half and leveled the playing field. For all intends and purposes, the Crew play a pretty solid game overall, although the game winner came at the end of the second half, followed by the nail in the coffin that seemed like the defense had just stopped caring. An uncontested shot after a save by Hesmer pretty much wrapped up the rest of the season for the Crew.

Now, Schelotto did get some playing time after the week of unrestricted training that he had. However, he was not placed into the game until the 83rd minute. Not too many more opportunities for set plays or offensive strikes came after that. The game ended, the fans left Crew Stadium for the last time this season with little hope of a playoff berth, and my record of seeing the Crew live stands a 0-5, 0-4 this season. I would like to think that I had jinxed the team, but they were much worse last year and I didn’t attend any games.

I hope that a victory comes out of at least one of the last two games, especially against DC. Even if they don’t, this has been a heartbreaking road that saw the Crew spoil their shot at the playoffs time and time again.

At least the Brats were good.
