We Have the Herron Suspension

By: Jeff | April 25th, 2007

Straight from the Major League Soccer (MLS) press release:

“The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee today fined Columbus Crew forward Andy Herron $3,000 and suspended him four games for violent conduct. New England Revolution midfielder Shalrie Joseph was fined $500 for lack of respect for the game.”

As one might assume from what I wrote here, I think Herron got off easy on this one: I would have doubled his suspension. Does the fine mitigate my discomfort in that regard? In all truth, yes. For one, these guys really don’t make all that much, so $3K seems like a pretty sharp hit to me. There’s also my sense that Herron was at least as frustrated at the ref as he was at Revolution defender Jay Heaps to consider.

So while I wouldn’t quite say “justice” was done, this comes close enough. Time to move on. And, writing as an - I dunno, friend of the Crew? - I hope his actions don’t hurt the team too badly.
