What’s the deal with these photos on thecrew.com and dispatch.com for the Crew/RSL game?

Sure the Crew lost, but the these pictures make it look like Rogers, Evans and Hesmer were in an episode of Oz.

Ekpo nominated for Goal of the Week

I was right. Ekpo’s goal is up for Goal of the Week for Week 14.
The clip of the goal is actually a bit disappointing since it starts after Ekpo popped the ball backwards over his own head and the guy covering him (Nick LaBrocca?). The thing that so impressed me, as I said before, was that he flicked the thing backwards and found it exactly where he expected it when he turned. He gained two steps on LaBrocca by not having to look for the ball. Maybe MLS needs to add a burn of the week… Funny enough, LaBrocca’s goal against the Crew is up for GOTW too, making him a featured performer in two of this weeks clips. There’s a clear choice in this campaign: Vote Ekpo.

Hey All, Don’t get too excited. This is just a goofy interview that I found. It is pretty entertaining, but it reminds me of a MySpace or Facebook quiz.

Also, it looks like over the weekend, Eddie Gaven gave the U-23 men’s national team the game winner over Honduras. The goal came in the 95th minute of the game (better late than never!) and was scored off of a penalty kick. That put the US in the top spot in the group and qualified them for the Semi-Finals. They play Canada tomorrow at 8pm in Nashville. Canada had a fantastic game out against Guatemala by defeating them 5:0 eh? Honduras will play Guatemala. Good Luck Guys!!

According to Seattlepi.com, the Crew are pursuing Gino Padula for the Left Back Position. The article says that Pedula has most recently played for Montpellier of the French Second Division. Sigi thinks it will “plug a hole” in the Crew back line.

Hey there Crew fans,

The update from the Crew’s website has a few interesting titbits. The organization is up for an award for charity work done in and around the Columbus area. Congrats on being finalists Crew! The stage construction at the stadium is nearing completion and should be done on the 15th of April. Where are the Supporter clubs going to be at now?

Looks like Eddie missed a shot for the go ahead goal after he entered the game during the 77th minute between the US and Cuba for the Olympic Qualifying… Come on guys!! We have to put Cuba away! But it’s time for redemption. Take out Panama boys!

Olympic Dreams

Hey Folks! Sorry I hadn’t posted in a few days. I made a trip to Cincy this weekend and was busy shovelling snow and trying to get back home after that winter storm hit. The roster for the Olympic team is out. It seems we will be losing Eddie Gaven to the US National team for the Olympics. In this article it also lists a few others that didn’t make the cut for Team USA, one of which was Robbie Rodgers. Disappointing as it may be only having one representative on the National Team, it isn’t a complete downer. I like to have as many high quality players that can play at the international level and can take down other international teams, however, I like that we are only losing one player during the Olympics, unlike Salt Lake who’s losing three! Congratulations to Eddie for making the cut and go for the Gold in China!!

Oughton Out, Schelotto and Peirce Back in?

According to this article, Duncan Oughton has no choice in playing for the New Zealand national team in two upcoming World Cup Qualifiers. It says that the coach, Ricki Herbert, had informed all players called upon by the NZ federation that they had to play or retire from international football. On, the upside, Schelotto has been practising this week without restrictions. Maybe this will get the mid field to calm down and make some sound passes to the strikers.

There was a story I was following yesterday, but couldn’t find an article to confirm it. The Crew will have a jersey sponsor that will be announced today at 2pm. I’ll post on it as soon as I can.

Opportunity comes a knockin’, again, no one answers

Sitting behind the south end goal at the end of the second minute of Sunday’s match-up against the Galaxy, my hopes ran high for this club. They were exactly where they needed to be. The Galaxy are now on their heels down 1-0, the Fire tied yesterday, and a good group effort to seal this game would put the Columbus Crew in charge of their own destiny…again. Previous games this month with bottom rung play off contenders ended with 1 tie (at home) and two loses (one of which was at home.) But now, the Crew had the break they needed, maybe not deserved, but needed. Just 88 long minutes to go. The Galaxy needed only 14 more minutes to seal the fate of this Crew squad and handed them a 2-1 loss after all was said and done.

What was rather interesting was the game that soon appeared after the Crew’s first goal. I have seen it before while driving home from work. Usually, it is played in the spring time at the local Catholic schools that I pass by in the afternoon. It’s called kick ball, and the Crew had a fantastic display of it on Sunday. The number of balls played into 50/50 situations was absolutely dumbfounding. These were not balls played into space on the wing to have some open Crew mate run on to them. This was, down the throat of the D, man-to-man marked or even double coverage, 50/50 kick ball. No one wanted to settle the ball in the middle of the field. A flick of the head would be good enough for the squad the first half of the game and a descent portion of the second half. By the end of the game, the Crew had settled down to play more possesion soccer and it started paying off. They out shot the Galaxy almost 2-1 and had four more shots on goal. The corner kicks were completely lopsided with the Crew having 8 to the Galaxy’s, oh, wait…they didn’t have any corner kicks.

After the hope and the belief that this squad could not only make the playoffs, but take control of their destiny, it was too good to be true. Now, Chicago is in control and will have to slip up…again… to allow the Crew any hope of squeezing into this tight playoff race. “A couple of chairs were thrown. We’re angry we let the people down, It was a great opportunity. It was a missed opportunity.” said Frankie Hejduk during a post game interview. They see what happened, they understand the missed opportunity that this game was. Now, even the Galaxy are searching to get back in this race.

There was opportunity knocking on the door of Crew Stadium. However, the ones that answered the door were the LA Galaxy. Will the Crew have another chance to answer? Only if the Fire trip on the way first.
