By way of introduction

Howdy.

As you have no doubt surmised, there’s a change in the lineup here at The Offside, Columbus branch. My name is Jim, and I have the honor of talking to you every day about of of my great passions, the Columbus Crew soccer team. I really don’t know all that’s expected of me in this capacity, so I will welcome any and all feedback. Think I’m full of crap? Tell me. Think I’m an idiot? I want to know. I guarantee you that for some of you, I’ll be an idiot who’s full of crap a good bit of the time. But what I will try never to be is boring.

As I continue to get my feet wet I’ll give you more backstory on my personal little slice of the black and gold world. Today I’ll give you some basics - I moved to Columbus the fall before the opening season of MLS. I’ve lived within walking distance of Crew Stadium since it opened. I have seen the Crew play in every season, under every coach they’ve had. I am very intense in my relationship with the club, and I have very mixed emotions about the current state and direction of the organization and the squad. I also have a pretty serious love/hate attitude towards the league as a whole, and sometimes, with the entire sport.

I imagine I’ll probably take this blog in a different direction than it was under Jeff. If this bothers some of you I apologize, but I ask that you have a bit of patience as I learn my way around this place. I hope to be entertaining, analytical, pedantic, and bothersome as I can be.

A warm welcome from the Man Yoo and Football League sides…
Looking forward to your tales of being a Crew fan. I still believe they have one of the coolest club badges in all of sports.

Welcome aboard, mate. It’s your job to make Columbus Crew soccer compelling to follow … which is only slightly less difficult than mine, doing the same for Real Salt Lake. We should have a support group of some sort. “My name is Ian, and I support a struggling team in a struggling league, mostly because I can’t live in a country with a better league”

    Chorus: “Hi Ian”

Different is good; it shouldn’t take much to improve on the dry experience I provided. Give ‘em hell and make ‘em love the Crew. If you can do that, I figure you can run the country.

    Ah….

Jeff, thanks for all your encouragement. I don’t know if I can get people to love the Crew, but I will certainly do my best to make everyone share my pain as a Crew supporter! Honestly, there is a lot to love about the club and the community, and, as time goes on, I hope to share that.

Hey Jim, welcome to the offside. I believe I was the most recent addition until you showed up so a heartfelt thanks for pushing me a little higher on the totem pole.

There’s a hierarchy? Egads! No one told me. Does this mean I have to bring coffee and doughnuts to the staff meetings?!?

Hey, I didn’t think about that, but yes, coffee would be lovely.
