Crew hand Liverpool Reserves Their First Loss of the Season

By: Matt | March 5th, 2009

The Crew made their trip to Merseyside a double after defeating the Liverpool reserves 2-0 today. Two wins against two Merseyside teams obviously equal two Scouse jokes. Number 1, What’s the difference between a Scouser and a coconut? One is thick and hairy, and the other is a coconut. *rimshot*. Number 2, Why does the River Mersey run through Liverpool? Because if it walked, it would be mugged *rimshot*. Oh right, the game. After a 45 minutes where both teams got chances, the two sides went to the locker rooms scoreless. It seemed to be clear that despite not scoring in the first half, the Crew were creating the better chances of the first half. Guillermo Barros Schelloto nearly got the first goal of the match after a nice free kick from the left wing that a Liverpool defender had to clear from the far post. Just a minute later, Robbie Rogers got a good chance with a near post shot that the Reds keeper did well in saving.

Five minutes into the second half, the Crew got onto the scoreboard. Gino Padula and Robbie Rogers connected for some nice passing down the left flank. Rogers then sent a nice cross to Schelloto who fired a shot on net. The Liverpool keeper was able to parry away but it fell right at the feet of Alejandro Moreno who put the chance away. Fifteen minutes later Eddie Gaven held off two L’pool defenders and found Schelloto who finished the ball into the corner of the net. After that, the Crew cruised to victory, controlling the match until the final whistle. Overall, the trip to England was a successful one for the boys in Black and Gold, going undefeated after a comfortable 5-1 victory over the Everton reserves and a workman-like 2-0 victory over Liverpool’s reserves. The Crew will return home Friday and have the weekend off before they return to training next week. With the season opener only two weeks away, it is good to see a full strength Columbus Crew team playing well.

Goals:
CLB – Alejandro Moreno 50

CLB – Guillermo Barros Schelotto (Eddie Gaven) 66
Crew Line-up:
William Hesmer, Frankie Hejduk, Danny O’Rourke, Chad Marshall, Gino Padula, Eddie Gaven, Brian Carroll, Emmanuel Ekpo (Duncan Oughton 77), Robbie Rogers, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Alejandro Moreno
