Dateline Columbus, July 2007…Crew the biggest thing in soccer since, well, ever.
By: scott | July 25th, 2007Greetings! I’m Scott, the new voice here at Offside Columbus. I’ve never actually “blogged” before so you’re going to have to be patient while I learn the ropes. Particularly in terms of the fancy photos and what not that makes the Offside such an appealing resource.
That said, I’m interested in what this forum can do for spreading the gospel of the Crew as far and as wide as possible. So, help me out. Write back, respond, comment, criticize anything I say or do on this page. I’ll promise to do the same and eventually, with a little luck, the good/smart/charming half of the world will discover the glory that is the black and gold. How will they resist our interesting banter?
Before I say anything of substance, I have a confession. I am relatively new to the Crew having moved to Columbus a little more than a year ago. But I’m an avid football fan and I’m doing the legwork to get a grasp on the history of the team. America’s hardest working team does indeed deserve a hard working blogger, and I’ll do my best to be just that. I make no promises, but I intend this space as a celebration of the Crew and all things Crew related. If you have ideas or interests you’d like to see explored here, drop me a line and we’ll see what we can do.
Here’s a couple things I’m planning on exploring further:
- Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s transition to MLS and a little more of the Argentine perspective. I think many Crew fans don’t know what a legend this man is. It should come as no surprise that the team is lifted by his presence.
- The complete disregard for the Crew in national soccer discourse. I listen to World Soccer Daily, I read blogs, I look at soccer websites and I rarely find more than a passing reference. It’s sickening really. This team is the story of the year in MLS, well, maybe not THE story of the year.
What a great time to be a Crew supporter. 5-1-2 in our last 8 games and loads of confidence riding into the second half of the season. Whereas last season’s team hit a stride after it was too late to recover (ah, remember those whippings we handed Dallas and Chicago?), this squad is strengthening at just the right time and all the early draws are really paying off. We’ve had potential all season–at times playing very beautiful soccer–and now its being realized.
Anyway, this is just the beginning. I’m really excited about this moment in Crew history, a turn back to the competitive sides of year’s past. No more cow-town jokes Chicago, DC, New York. Crew Nation, help me make this thing great.
Sing loud, sing proud, it’s Columbus til you die.

Scott,
The new podcast and web site — Major League Soccer Talk — covers the Crew quite a bit. If you get a chance, give it a whirl and listen at http://www.majorleaguesoccertalk.com

Welcome. I’m glad this blog is back. I, too, am new to the blogosphere. Considering such, I am not sure what the rules and etiquette are. For example, are you allowed to refer to other, rival Crew blogs? The reason I ask is this: On the Hunt Park Insider, they recently made reference to Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s twin brother, Gustavo, being in Crew training gear at a Crew practice. Gustavo played for–as far as I read–Gimnasia and Boca as well as in the USL for Puerto Rico Islanders. Can anyone verify any of this? Is he simply here to ease Guile’s transition OR could he be a potential addition to the team? Maybe this would be a good issue for the “Argentine Perspective” to weigh in on. This also raises the issue of additional international signings. It seems other teams are attempting to make, or rumored to be making, additional signings to bolster their rosters right now. Chicago with Paulo Wanchope in addition to Blanco; DC United and Sebastian Veron; FC Dallas with a host of internationals such as Denilson; etc. Are there any rumors circulating about potential Crew signings? Why not? Do we need to bolster our roster? Just some thoughts. Lastly, no need to point out to me if everything I’ve said here is completely bone-headed. I’m a novice. Thanks in advance.
