Depression leads to pain

“Crew ‘til I dieâ€

(And I hope I get run over by a bus on the way home from the stadium.)

I don’t know if there’s any way I can coherently express the level of anger, frustration, and sadness I’ve reached because of the game yesterday against Houston. Consequently, my postings this week might be a little haphazard.

(Oh, and about last week sorry. It was my busiest week of the year at work and every time I started writing something I never finished it…)

In the past couple of seasons watching Columbus has been sad, depressing. From a perennial playoff contender they’ve descending into one of the worst teams in the league. While they’ve rarely won any silverware (the 2002 Open Cup and the 2004 Supporters Shield being the two trophies we’ve won), until the 2005 season there was always the chance that, were not DC United in our way, we could almost, maybe, possibly win it all. Over the past two-and-a-third seasons we can’t even pretend we might win anything, the fantasy is just too painful.

And painful is what watching the Crew is like now. It’s no longer sad or depressing; it’s a palpable, physical sense of discomfort that overcomes me when I watch them play like they did last evening. The difference between this season and the past two is simple - Columbus have become the sort of team I’ve dreamed that they would become. The pass the ball well, they are creative and even whimsical with the ball to their feet. They can play themselves out of danger without a sense of panic, and they can be almost lyrical when setting up the offense. But they still don’t score. So, while it’s depressing to watch a bunch of incompetent hacks, it’s even worse to watch a bunch of talented guys botch nearly every chance they get. And what’s worse is that when they do score it’s never out of luck or ugly play, it’s out of talent and grace. Schelloto’s pass to Moreno was a thing of beauty; the lucky goals, the ones which are flukes, we have no time for. We leave those to the teams who defeat us.

For the first half we were the better team. And yet we gave up two goals to a team whom we outplayed, and could only get one back. That’s the story of our season. And, for the first time ever, I’m convinced - Sigi must go.

It is a sad state of affairs in C-Bus. Sigi is a great coach but it just doesn’t seem to be working with the players he has. Sometimes you have to hit the bottom before working your way back to the top. I hope that is the case with the Crew because fans like you deserve better.

The question is, does a better option than Sigi exist? If not, change just for the sake of change could make things worse. (Yes, I think they could get worse.) At least there are moments of promise. But this losing streak sure is leaving a foul taste in my mouth ….

This past game was really a litmus test. I told my wife and friends “We may actually see a victory today considering we’re: 1. At home; 2. Are only without Hejduk; 3. And Houston is without their top five players—Onstand, Ching, De Rosario, can’t remember, and Dalglish.” WRONG! And even if it weren’t for that horrendous own goal, we would have tied, which is almost worse to me now. All of this comes on the heals of the Chicago loss where they allow a guy to go the length of the field and score on a solo run. That is like a PlayStation or Xbox reenactment. I am not sure what the moments of promise are. I feel bad bad for Schelotto having uprooted his family and brought them here to watch him play in a 1/4 full stadium for the worst team in the league. Having said that, he needs to stop with the “don’t want to step on anyone’s toes” bs and step UP! Sigi needs to go out and get him someone/some people to play with instead of trading and counter-trading his samey-samey cast of usual suspects. The Crew is worse at soccer than the Blue Jackets are at hockey and that is saying something.

The Crew played a solid first half and very even. Granted, the own goal should have never happened. Also, give credit to Houston for a great corner kick for their score.

The second half showed very little offense. When we had the ball it was almost always on the left side of hte field where we were double and triple teamed. Very few crosses were made to the right side and very few runs were made by our right side.

I will also say the referee’ing was bad. Multiple no-calls and several calls that left me scratching my head, but none of which kept us from scoring a second goal.

Yeah, they’ve missed a couple of good weeks for a Crew fan, and those have been pretty rare lately.

There’s a pretty active Crew community on BigSoccer.com, and http://www.huntparkinsider.com is a good blog. Try those.

And if anybody knows of other and/or better resources which I haven’t mentioned, please feel free to pitch in.

I wonder if they’re looking for a new writer to take over this blog? I could maybe be coerced …..
