Playoffs – Salt Lake 1-0 Columbus
By: Chris | October 31st, 2009It’s Halloween, and I’m scared.
Not of the hordes of ghosts and goblins floating around as I type this, but rather that the MLS season of my beloved Columbus Crew will come to an end on Thursday night.
Tonight, as they took on Real Salt Lake in the first leg of the home-and-home playoff series, The Massive looked anemic. Impotent. Unimpressive.
I know that they might have been bunkering for a nil-nil draw in order to bring the series back to Columbus even, but even still – they just looked like they were unable to play their game.
The Crew have scored one goal in their past five games, and that lone tally was on a fluke free kick. The offense is stalled, and no one is stepping up and making things happen. They’ve had plenty of chances, but no one on the squad is forcing the ball into the net like earlier in the season.
Where is the fire? Where is the work ethic? Where is the veteran leadership (though I bet Frankie went off in the locker room after tonight’s match)? Where is the team that was kicking ass and taking names in August and September?
I don’t want to dig into this game to much, else I’ll just wind up repeating what I’ve said before, but you can watch the highlights here. Let’s just suffice it to say that Robert Warzycha needs to find some offense. Quickly.
Or else he’ll be watching the MLS Cup from his couch rather than the sidelines in Seattle.

Chris, I was at the game and right behind the end of the Crew’s bench, where the Crew subs were jogging. I kept expecting your coach to bring more offense in but he didn’t. I have to also note that while I expected a sellout with a loud partisan crowd it really wasn’t that big a crowd. I think either Halloween or the bug Wyoming v Utah football game kept the crowd moderately sized. That said and as much as I love RSL and want them to advance, I have no illusions that Columbus will give anything but their all on Thursday night. That is a game I am watching for sure. And I will bet you are 100% right about Frankie in the locker room. I bet he “went off” for sure. Rocky

I have a solution for the Crew offense. How about playing the only thing that got us to a championship last year? How about playing and giving a little bit of respect to the spark of our offense? I am sorry but I still do not understand the Columbus Crew from the front office, up onto the field. Why did Barros Schelotto get benched? Why has his contract not been decided for the future of this organization? I do not understand the reason for all of this. If I were anywhere in the links of making a SOUND BUSINESS DECISION, I would definitely secure the contract and future of Schelotto. Does anyone else understand that without him our offense is nothing. Yeah, the bulldog-like approach of Moreno and some fresh legs off the bench will give you some energy, but lack of skill catches up my friends. Schelotto walks and plays better than anyone on our team running and sprinting. The absence of our key player is the reason we have did so badly. The crew have not only demonstrated a lack of skill and knowledge of the game, but also lack the professionalism that an organization needs to be a dynasty. Not just a one year luck run to the MLS Cup. If it were me I’d give Schelotto whatever he wanted, not undervalue him and offer even less than he was making after he won a championship with us. So now what? Ask him to play and save the crew once again? So that he can just be benched next leg of playoffs?
