Predictions and the Three-Headed Captain
By: Jeff | April 5th, 2007Keeping up with season previews is one of my principle preseason hobbies, which has provided plenty of opportunity to see how people and pundits across the country think the Columbus Crew will fare in 2007.
What I’ve found is that, when people look at the Crew as a team in isolation, they generally like what they see; even pundits in Dallas think they’ve got some intriguing upside. It’s when the Crew get stacked up against the rest of the East that things go sideways. Check out where this parade of doubters places the Men-in-Yellow: Utah’s Deseret News, 5th; the statistically-savvy blog, Climbing the Ladder, pegs the Crew into the 6th spot; a new-to-me site called USA Soccer Spot seconds the Deseret News’ plug for 5th. So, it’s fair to say I’m one of the more optimistic observers, so…c’mon Columbus, make me look wise.
UPDATE: It gets worse. In his preseason look-ahead, Sports Illustrated’s Jonah Freedman didn’t so much as mention the Crew.
In other Crew news, a local blog called Sensory Overload (which comes out of something called Columbus Alive, one of them “alt-weeklies” that exist in any city of size) pledges to cover the Crew this season in between a bunch o’ other stuff. But it also mentions how Sigi Schmid will handle the captaincy this season: he’s appointed three “co-captains,” Ezra Hendrickson, Duncan Oughton, and Frankie Hejduk. Learned the lessons of an injury-scarred 2006, haven’t we Sigi?
And if Schmid’s really worried, there are always other captains out there.
