Quick Parsing of Crew Salaries

By: Jeff | May 4th, 2007

As damn near everyone knows by now, the Major League Soccer players’ union released the salaries of every player in MLS – and I feel dirtier by degrees with each passing minute I dig around this stuff.

Apparently, I have a tolerance for muck because I managed to pull together a team-by-team assessment of the best bargain and the biggest bust on each MLS team’s roster. Those curious as to how I rated the rest of the league can bop over to the entry on my site and have at it. But, for the purposes of this space, I’ll only copy/paste the passage on the Columbus Crew:

Columbus Crew
Bargain: Given his year so far, Ned Grabavoy, who’s pulling down a spare $52,550.25 guaranteed (why the quarter?).
Bust: And given his year so far – actually his entire stint with Columbus, you gotta wonder if Eddie Gaven is worth a $188,000 hit to the salary cap.
Overview: The Crew is the first team that seems a bit out of whack, but, to cut them some slack, injuries have seriously complicated some signings’ potential. (NOTE: Having looked at a few of the more egregious examples, the Crew err on the side of generosity.)

Hey, Becks is pulling down. $5,500,000.08. Because those eight cents would have been a total dealbreaker.

Galaxy has a rookie who’s played every single minute of every game so far and is making $17,700. Talk about a bargain.

Just visited your site and see that you mentioned Ty as a bargain.

In Santino Quaranta’s defense, he’s been out so far this year with an achilles tendon injury. This is the week we start to get to see if he’s a bargain or a bust.

Nice tip on Santino. He’s another one who can turn it around; don’t think I mentioned that, but you’re right.

Holy crap I hate Bob Kraft.

Fascinating to read. Thanks for taking the time to break it all down.
