Robbie Rogers: Yes/No/Maybe So?
By: Chris | November 11th, 2009It’s the offseason in Columbus, and that means rumors about players and contracts and whatnot are as easy to find as a Buckeye hoodie. Robbie Rogers seems to have become the first player to fall victim of fan speculation.
First, to grease the wheels of gossip, Robbie himself tweetered that he was on his way out of Columbus. Of course, those of us with rational heads on our shoulders assumed that he meant for the off season. Because, ya know, he’s from California.
But then came news from duNord that Robbie would be left unprotected in the Expansion Draft, and then a blurb from Ives saying that Rogers is out of contract, and then there’s another source who is positive that Robbie is as good as gone (and I think we all believe her word above any other /wink/).
I don’t know how much of this is truth or speculation, but I can’t wait to find out because I love Robbie, I really do. And I want him back in Columbus next year.
On two conditions:
1) He doesn’t go to Europe. I don’t want to hold back his career and if a European club come knock he should most certainly answer. He has the potential and skills to play for a first division squad anywhere outstide of England, or he could go tear things up in the Cola-ship. God knows if Newcastle signed him I’d be ecstatic.
2) He grows some cojones. Or finds the ones he has. Or stops playing at 80%. Something. I’d like to buy him a beer and say “Robbie, brah, you’ve got a stellar game, you’re wicked fast and the ladies can’t get enough. But sometimes, buddy, you just need to shoot the ball. You did it a lot in ‘08 – but in ‘09, what happened?”
(I just had a thought: Maybe since Robbie scored goals in ‘08 and crossed the ball in in ‘09, that means in twentyten he’ll put the two together and be a BAMF)
So that’s where we stand with our pretty boy winger. No one who knows anything is saying anything and the people that are saying things don’t know anything.
I know this: I don’t want to see the 2009 version of Robbie Rogers ever again.

I doubt he is going to Europe after his 09 performance. After 08? yeah, I can see that, but not after this year. This year he seemed to intentionally slow himself down. Not running with the same pace that he did in 08. On the other hand, he was FIRE with the USMNT. I though his performances for country would boost his confidence and performance for club. That didn’t really happen. It almost seems like a page from the McBride book in his last few years with the Crew. I really wish him the best. He can really terrorize some clubs if he plays with his shorts lit on fire. Just my two cents …….. ok, maybe it’s more like a nickle

It’d be a shame if Robbie left, because he’s obviously got talent. I’m not sure if it’s a nagging injury or what that saw his performance go down, but I don’t think suitors, MLS or Europe, are going to be interested in giving him a big deal. If Philly doesn’t snag him in the expansion draft, I say we give him a 1 year deal and see what we can get.

As a Dynamo fan, we’ll take him. If we can keep Holden, they are perfect partners.

Great asset to any club. If the Crew dont show the love their are plenty of teams that will.

Robbie has done some serious improvement. Rogers excelled in 2008 offensively because he was a young player with amazing talent and he used it the way he new best: attack, attack, attack relentlessly, which would explain the abundance and quality of his goals in 2008. He took players on, he took shots, never crossed, even ridiculously played with his back to goal sometimes. In 2009, he decided that the only way he was going to not only be a good player for the Crew, but an option for the national team was that he improved the disciplinary part of his game. That involved refining his crosses, dropping defensively, using his speed properly and being a bit less selfish with the ball. While it proved for a slightly less entertaining Rogers, the success rate was about the same as 2008, despite the Crew’s obvious struggles this year.
I think he needs to go to Europe so he will be trained by a coach and play in a league that will help him put the two egos of Robbie Rogers into a more complete winger.

I agree that he was trying to make his game more well rounded and become an overall baller, but pulling up inside the box and passing when he should have at least tried to get the ball into the net killed him, and the Crew’s attack.

Chris, I’ll agree that Rogers was a bit less ambitious when we know he can blow through some of the wingbacks in MLS, but you have to admit that the other parts of his game have been substantially improved and once he gets more time with the National team and maybe gets a club overseas he’ll be able to put the two together and become a MUCH better player.

Oh, I completely agree with everything you just said. Don’t get me wrong.
But the problem is, and maybe I’m being a tad selfish here, that I want Robbie to become a MUCH better player while he’s wearing the Black & Gold. Robbie doing great things for some team in France or The Netherlands does zero good for the Crew.
Maybe it’s just me though.
