Slow News Days…and OUTRAGE!
By: Jeff | April 3rd, 2007If my brief time on the Columbus Crew beat has taught me anything, it’s that finding daily news on the team can be a bit tricky.
That doesn’t mean I’m giving up (dammit). And my efforts today did yield results. For instance, an item related to the Landon-to-Barcelona “rumor” reported yesterday on The Offside’s Los Angeles space, another “rumor” tells me that David Beckham is Columbus-bound. Huzzah!! (Except, of course, that he isn’t. Oh, April 1st. Why are my heart and hopes your playthings?)
But there is real news out there - and it does involve Beckham. It turns out that Harrisburg, Pennsylvania has a USL Division 2 team called the Harrisburg City Islanders. It seems that this team, should it manage to make it far enough into the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, will face the winner of the play-in between the Columbus Crew and the Los Angeles Galaxy. It turns out further that the Islanders, eager to cash in on Beckham-mania, have already started selling tickets to a Galaxy-plus-Beckham game. In other words, they’re already counting out* the Crew before the two MLS clubs kick out the ball (on April 24, for the record; go here and scroll down to “MLS play-in dates revealed”).
* All right. So that’s taking license. While the Islanders are selling tickets for that game, they’ve got this back-up in place where, in the event their team doesn’t qualify for the Open Cup, and if they don’t draw the Galaxy, the money spent on tickets gets donated to local soccer facilities in Beckham’s name. Kinda clever, actually.
At any rate, I’m still trying to find sources for Crew coverage and expect that’ll take some doing. My method of scouring the BigSoccer message boards is yielding some goods. For instance, they’re already talking about what about this weekend’s home opener against Red Bull New York on the boards. I joined in there, but will throw out something more formal closer to the game in this space.

That also counts out my Red Bulls who the winner of the Crew v. Galaxy game plays prior to meeting any USL 2 club. Not cool, but hey if the money goes to soccer development you can’t really complain.
