Sorting out Robbie (Rogers, that is)

By: Jeff | April 5th, 2007

If you caught me between edits this morning, you may have noticed new Columbus Crew signing Robbie Rogers’ name in the headline to an early post. If you read the thing, you would have noticed the lack of Rogers-related content. There was a reason for this.

I walked away from the Columbus Dispatch’s feature on Rogers’ with half a notion in my head that his head wasn’t in central Ohio, as opposed to, say, his native Southern California. And it was passages like those below that caused the confusion:

“For now, Rogers, a winger from California, is content to be with the Crew with a chance to show what he can do to big-city audiences…’I'm a lot happier here,’ he said. ‘I thought I should give (Europe) a shot, and maybe I made the wrong decision. But I’m still young, and I’m here now.’”

No disrespect to Shawn Mitchell, who follows the Crew for the Dispatch, but USSoccerplayers.com’s Marc Connolly explained Rogers’ state of mind a bit more clearly in his big write-up. There’s a lot in there about Rogers’ long-time relationship to Crew coach Sigi Schmid, his familiarity with some of the players, and his upside as a player. For all that, though, there’s also an inkling that he’s not where he wants to be, that his mind might be with the next club.

As someone who predicted good things for the Crew - and as someone who has to watch them 30 times this year at least - I certainly hope his head is with his current club in the here and now. Still, this is something to watch.

Many Wizard fans were hoping it was Kansas City who won the lottery instead of Columbus… Robbie was looking especially good before it became apparent we were adding an A-mid.

What is his role going to be this year with Columbus?

Oh, Michael. You evil, evil commenter; you’re making me think….

Seriously, the Connolly article provides an answer:

“…Schmid sees him as a left-sided midfielder at the moment, where he can take advantage of his strong left-footed shot and abilities to beat defenders to the line to serve balls in.”

We’ll see what happens to Schmid’s vision.
