Ngwenya Gone: Moreno? MORENO?
By: Jeff | May 9th, 2007On my way to the newsstand - the MLS Newsstand, that is - I saw a headline that read, “Dynamo Trade Moreno for Ngwenya.” Hopefully, that explains my title - and here’s the article that came after the link. And, to be perfectly clear, the Columbus Crew appears to have completed a trade that send Joseph Ngwenya to the Houston Dynamo in exchange for Alejandro Moreno. Now, some thoughts.
So…let me get this straight: the Crew’s biggest problem is offense, the forward line in particular and they go out and get a player who, according to the Houston Chronicle’s report, has scored 23 goals, plus tallying 16 assists, in six MLS seasons. Fewer than four goals per annum is supposed to help…how?
Don’t get me wrong: I love Alejandro Moreno as a player, not least for an unbelievable work-rate and an uncanny ability to draw fouls - and maybe the latter will come in handy with Guillermo Schelotto around. And Moreno wears this wonderful grin while he plays, just the perfect picture of the face someone wears after they’ve stolen your keys without you noticing. So, hopeful as I am to be proved wrong, I’m not seeing the savvy behind this trade. I dunno…maybe it’s a marketing thing…is there a huge Venezeulan population in Columbus?
Anyway, best of luck to Moreno who has always seemed a decent sort. Welcome aboard, man. The same for Ngwenya; good luck in Houston.
Finally, let the record show that the Columbus Dispatch turned in a piece on this; means the right people will notice, right?
